Abstract

Medium voltage grid earth fault protection effectiveness in the detection of arc faults with a large transition resistance can be significantly improved by using the criterion of reactive power of the third harmonic of current and voltage zero symmetrical components. The paper presents a model of such a criterion-based protection, with analytical equations to calculate the protection settings, and results of tests of the protection effectiveness in an MV network with natural asymmetry and harmonic distortions. It has been shown that with the criterion of reactive power of the third harmonic of voltage and current zero components, the arc, stationary, and non-stationary line-to-earth short circuits with a very high transition resistance – above 50 kΩ can be detected in cable lines, and above 100 kΩ in overhead lines.
